Product Review: Banana Rhassoul Deep Condish from Anita Grant

5 Jul

Description from the company website:

Our Rhassoul Deep  Condishes contains Unrefined Black Cocoa Butter & natural Soya based Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) which helps to  guard scalp & hair from free radical damage. When hot liquid is added to our  Rhassoul Deep Condishes, it swells & increases its surface area like a  highly porous sponge.  Attracting & trapping toxins into these open porous  spaces so that when it comes time to rinse the Rhassoul Deep Condish from your  hair the toxins are eliminated and you’re left with detoxified fluffy soft  tresses.

So instead of a Hot Oil treatment why not detoxify your scalp & hair.

5 Things I Love About the Banana Rhassoul Deep Condish:

  1. It was easy to mix following the easy directions on Anita Grant’s website
  2. Excellent ingredients including rhassoul clay, olive oil, vitamin e, and honey
  3. Left my hair extremely soft and feeling very moisturized
  4. It smells great, and it left my hair with a nice light scent (It’s banana scented and has a bit of a chocolate smell)
  5. Can be mixed with your choice of liquids and herbs

My hair has been very dry because I’ve been lazy with it recently. I hoped that this treatment could help to revive it, and it exceeded all of my expectations. Here’s what I did:

  • To mix, you need a hot liquid. I chose to mix with coconut milk. This was one of the suggestions on Anita Grant’s website, and I love coconut milk. You may recall I use it in my Henna recipe.
  • I warmed the coconut milk
  •  I added the heart and used a fork to break it up
  • I stirred until it was a mud-like consistency
  • I left the clay on for 45 minutes
  • Then I rinsed well

My hair felt great afterwards. I didn’t even need a leave-in. I’ve had my hands in my hair all day. This is great for anyone looking for a deep conditioner that gives great results. I would especially recommend it to those who are experiencing dryness. Check out Anita Grant’s website for this and other items made with high quality ingredients.

Thanks to Anita Grant for giving me the opportunity to try this product!

I always tell people that products, drinks, vitamins, etc… won’t magically make your hair grow. However, vitamins are a great addition to a hair regimen. A good regimen and vitamins can promote growth and length retention. I am very happy with the condition of my hair after the thirty days. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. I expected it to taste awful, and it doesn’t taste bad at all. I mixed it with different beverages and drank it alone. It worked well either way. For those of you who are watching your calories, these vitamins are only 20 calories per serving. Thanks to Nzuri for giving me a chance to try this elixir.

Product Review: Juices & Berries from Oyin Handmade

2 Apr

Description from the website:

“Greg Juice” has been one of our most popular products since its introduction more than two years ago – “Juices and Berries” is the same oil-free mixture of vegetable moisturizers and herbal essences; The change? The fragrance… Juices and Berries is fragranced with the juiciest, fruitiest, brightest fruit scent we could find! Perfect for summer, or anytime you want to sweeten your day.

I recently did a review of Greg Juice , which is just one of the Oyin Handmade items that I have tried recently. I tried Greg Juice, Frank Juice, and Juices & Berries. They all work the same way, but this scent was my favorite.

Juices & Berries contains: purified water infused with horsetail, lavender, nettle, roses, and chamomile; organic flaxseeds; aloe vera juice; vegetable glycerine; essences of lavender, sweet orange, ylang ylang; grapefruit seed extract; citric acid. It is naturally preserved with grapefruit seed extract and citric acid. Please use within 6-12 months, refrigerate for extended storage.

5 Things I Like About Juices & Berries (8oz.-$11):

  1. It has excellent ingredients.
  2. It leaves my hair feeling hydrated without weighing it down.
  3. It works well even when it’s diluted.
  4. Wonderful scent!!
  5. I can use it so many different ways including as a leave-in, as a refreshing spritz, a detangler, etc…

I like all of the same things about this that I liked about Greg Juice.  It’s  a great staple item to have because it’s multipurpose. Depending on your needs, you can dilute it to stretch it further. I purchased it from the Oyin Handmade website. If you want to see if it’s available at a store near you, check the site’s store locator. If you aren’t sure what you’d like, check out the sample sizes. I just ordered a new container of this because my sister “borrowed” the last one I bought. She loves it for keeping her sisterlocks moisturized.

Product Review: Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil

28 Mar

This post is a part of Natural Hair CommUNITY Days

This is another item that I received from LaVida Given by Nature. If you didn’t see my review of Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress, check it out HERE .

Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil (4oz. $19.43)

Description from the site:

Perfect for the dry winter months!  Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil keeps your hair moisturized between washings. Great when used moderately as a daily hair oil.
Carrot oil is rich in beta carotene, vitamins A (for a healthy scalp) and E (helping to stimulate hair growth) and provitamin A.  Castor Oil is a natural humectant that draws moisture out of the air bringing it directly to the hair shaft.  The hue of the oil comes from Carotene (deriving from the the carrot root extract) giving it it’s golden orange glow.

I used this oil in a few different ways. I used it immediately after applying my leave-in conditioner. I used it as a pre-poo. Mostly I used it as a daily hair oil. I loved it every way.

5 Things I Like:

  • Great ingredients including Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil,Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract,  Cocos nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Oil, Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Brassica oleracea italica (Broccoli) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Prunus dulcis var. amara (Bitter Almond), Litsea cubeba (Litsea), Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
  • It doesn’t weigh your hair down or leave it greasy
  • Works well for locs or loose hair
  • It smells great
  • Gives my hair a healthy sheen

I actually didn’t think that I liked castor oil before trying this. It felt too heavy. I’d never tried carrot oil. The combination worked wonders for me.  When I did my dry twist set, I used nothing on my hair besides the Ginger Juice & Berries and this oil for maintenance. It was so soft and had a nice healthy sheen. It’s also great for refreshing a wash and go. I spritzed with rosewater & glycerin and then topped it with a little of this oil. It’s great.

Product Review: Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress

12 Mar

I won a contest on Twitter and LaVida, the owner of LaVida Given by Nature , sent me a sampler package of her hair products. I’m going to review each one separately.

Description from the website:

Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress – 4 oz ($18.35)

This product was created out of desire for the total package.  Nothing too thick, too oily or too heavy but I wanted something that would coat and protect my hair (specifically thick natural, highly textured coils) when wearing a plaited style longer than a few weeks – all while nourishing and strengthening my hair.  After 2 years of formulating Ginger Juice & Berries, I finally came up with the perfect recipe that meets all of those hair demands.  Another bonus that was discovered is the lack of heavy product build after wearing a style for an extended period of time.

Benefits:

  • The medicinal qualities of comprised ingredients are said to lend in the effect of blood circulation in order to stimulate hair growth.
  • Rich in Vitamin C.
  • Coats and protects hair from elements.
  • Strengthens hair at the root.

5 Things I Like About Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress

  1. Excellent ingredients including: Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Arnica montana (Flower) Extract, Sesamum indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Emblica Officinalis (Amla) Extract, Bacopa monniera (Brahmi) Extract, Jatamansi Nardostachys (Spikenard) Extract, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Elaeis guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil, Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Lecithin, Candelilla (Euphorbia cerifera) Wax, Glycine Soja (Soybean)Wax, Green Tea Extract, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Root Powder, Eleuthrococcus senticocus (Ginseng) Powder, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Alkanna tinctoria (Alkanet) Root Powder, Artemisia pallens (Davana) Oil, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Oil, Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, Tocopherol
  2. Leaves my hair feeling soft with no greasy residue
  3. Great for daily use
  4. Great light scent
  5. Multipurpose

I loved this! Since I stopped using petroleum in my hair, I haven’t been able to find a hairdress. Ginger Juice & Berries fills that void. I can use it to keep my puff moisturized, it would be great as a hairdress if you have your hair straightened, wonderful for short haircuts, and it works great for protective styles.

I used it for a set of dry twists. When I attempted those in the past, the products were too heavy. This one does the job while still feeling very light. I used it in combination with LaVida Given by Nature’s Carrot and Castor Conditioning Oil.

After a week, I took the twists out. I had the best twist out I’ve ever had.

I will get better photos the next time I do a set of twists. This product will definitely be added to my list of staples. I am currently using the 20z jar, and most of it is still there after several uses.

Product Review: Greg Juice from Oyin Handmade

3 Feb

Description from the website:

Greg juice is an oil-free mixture of vegetable moisturizers and herbal essences combined in a beautiful amber pump spray bottle. It feeds hair & scalp like a salad, and is great for moisturizing, detangling & refreshing thirsty strands. It also boasts an herbal-citrus smell that’s absolutely delicious. I initially developed the recipe for my cousin Greg’s locks and he told me he was sniffing his own hair all week!

I have heard great things about Oyin Handmade for some years now, but I never tried any of their products. I decided to order a few samples to test a few items from their line. Greg juice was one of the items that I tried.

Greg Juice contains: purified water infused with horsetail, lavender, nettle, roses, and chamomile; organic flaxseeds; aloe vera juice; vegetable glycerine; essences of lavender, sweet orange, ylang ylang; grapefruit seed extract; citric acid. It is naturally preserved with grapefruit seed extract and citric acid. Please use within 6-12 months, refrigerate for extended storage.

5 Things I Like About Greg juice (8oz.-$11):

Greg juice is a nourishing leave-in.

  1. It has excellent ingredients.
  2. It leaves my hair feeling hydrated without weighing it down.
  3. It works well even when it’s diluted.
  4. Nice scent
  5. I can use it so many different ways including as a leave-in, as a refreshing spritz, a detangler, etc…

I really enjoyed Greg juice. This is a great staple item to have because it’s multipurpose. Depending on your needs, you can dilute it to stretch it further. I purchased mine from the Oyin Handmade website. If you want to see if it’s available at a store near you, check the site’s store locator. If you aren’t sure what you’d like, check out the sample sizes. I also tried Frank juice, Juices & Berries, Whipped Pudding, and Shine & Define. Stay tuned for more Oyin Handmade product reviews.

Product Review: Free Your Mane Line

14 Jan

The owner of Free Your Mane sent me full-sized bottles of the entire Free Your Mane line to try.  Here is a little background information about the company including how adopting twin African-American boys inspired the founder to begin the company:

“Most of the ethnic hair care products on the shelves were still were still composed primarily of cheap fillers, low quality ingredients such as petrolatum and mineral oil — basically the waste from the petroleum manufacturing industry.  Searching hard, I did find a few all-natural ‘kitchen’ remedies responding to the nascent green market. Sadly, these products were ineffective and overly fragranced. After three years of intensive research, development and testing, I am thrilled to announce the arrival of Free Your Maneä, a revolution in black hair care. The Free Your Mane product line has been developed for adult women of color whose needs, until now, have been summarily ignored by the beauty industry.

All Free Your Mane products blend the best of nature and science. We infuse Brilliant Baobab Oil,from Africa (which can hold up to eight times its weight in moisture!), with other beneficial oils for a modern, stylish and very lightly fragranced product. We ban mineral oil, petrolatum, sulfate, phthalates and parabens from our entire line so Free Your Mane doesn’t sacrifice your health for beauty’s sake.  Israel Segal- Founder”

7% of Free Your Mane’s profits go to it’s charitable organization, Se%en. You can find more information about that on their website.

Sulfate Free Shampoo 10.14oz ($15.95)/Daily Detangling Conditioner 10.14oz ($15.95)

The shampoo and conditioner are sulfate and paraben free. They both have a light musky scent that is great for a man or a woman. The shampoo did not make my hair feel stripped, and I only needed a small amount to get a good lather. The conditioner was creamy and moisturizing.

Intgensive Hydrating Hair Masque 8.45oz ($19.95)

I applied the hair masque and covered with a plastic cap. I left it on for about 45 minutes. When I took the cap off my hair was soft and really felt hydrated. The package states that you can heat the cap with a warm blow dryer or leave the masque on overnight to enhance results. I used this as my deep conditioner after my most recent Henna treatment.

Restorative Hair Oil 4.1oz ($24.95)

My first thought was that no oil is worth $25. I didn’t expect it to work any differently than other oil. I have to say that my hair felt very soft after using a little of this oil. My uncle tried a little, and he fell in love with it immediately. He got the same results of soft hair. Like the other products it contains argan oil and baobab oil. When I compared prices to other products that contain these ingredients, some were more expensive. Others were about the same. The container is small, but it could last because you don’t need to use much.

Reviving Spray 6.08oz ($14.95)

I used the reviving spray on an old braid-out to restyle my hair. Instead of wetting, I spritzed it with this spray and then styled. When I finished, my hair had a nice sheen and felt more moiturized. It also dried quicker than it does when I use water to reset it. The spray didn’t leave my hair feeling sticky or heavy.

Conditioning Pomade 4.10z. ($15.95)

I think this might be my favorite. It does not work like a gel. Because it’s a pomade, it is thicker and heavier. Unlike other pomades I’ve tried, my hair wasn’t greasy or dry after using it. It’s called a conditioning pomade, and it really left my hair feeling conditioned. A little of it goes a long way. I’ve used it to lay down the edges of my hair. I also used it on the ends of my twists. This is great for those times when you want a very sleek look. Thisgreat for special occasions when you don’t want to risk flyaways, frizz, or flakes.

Overall, I liked this line a lot. I’ve been using them for about a month. As I mentioned, the products have a light musk scent. So many lines have a floral feminine smell. I wonder what’s available for men who want products with great ingredients. Free Your Mane is a great unisex line. I didn’t have to use much of any of the products except the conditioner (I always use a lot of conditioner). This is a great line for those of you who are interested in trying argan oil.

Stay tuned for a giveaway sponsored by Free Your Mane!!

Product Review: Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Conditioner

11 Jan

When it comes to inexpensive shampoos, Herbal Essences have been  the primary ones that I’ve used. Hello Hydration and Totally Twisted are the two I’ve tried and liked. They were both creamy, smelled great, and worked well for cowashing. When I heard of Long Term Relationship, I thought I’d give it a try. I have to say that I was disappointed.

2 Things I Like:

  1. It was inexpensive (about $3 for 12oz.)
  2. It is sold at several different stores and easy to find.

3 Things I Didn’t Like:

  1. It was too thick for me. I like creamy conditioners, but this was too thick.
  2. It didn’t work well as a cowash conditioner.
  3. My hair felt coated after using it.

This conditioner was okay, but I won’t by it again. I’d  heard good things about Long Term Relationship. I did not get those same results. For whatever reason, it didn’t work well for my hair. It had an okay scent, but I had too much trouble working it into my hair. Because it was so difficult to cowash my hair with it, I ended up using too much. I am glad that I purchased the small bottle, and it didn’t last because I had to add a lot to make sure that my hair was fully covered. When it comes to Herbal Essences, I will stick to Hello Hydration and Totally Twisted. Those two worked much better for me.
