Tips for the New Natural

Here are a few tips I would give to the new natural:

  1. Don’t compare your hair to anyone else’s. If you are doing that, you aren’t taking the time to appreciate what’s great about your own hair.
  2.  Stop saying “I can’t wait until my hair is longer”. Just enjoy this stage for what it is and appreciate it.Focus on health instead of length. If you take care of your hair, growth will come. Keep it healthy!
  3. Find a simple regimen that works for you. You don’t have to try EVERY product.
  4. Do your own research and find out what is best for your hair.
  5. Moisturize your hair. Just because it’s short doesn’t mean that you don’t need to take care of it.

I asked my Facebook and Twitter friends “What Tips Would You Give to Someone Who Just Did the Big Chop?”. Here are the responses:

  • nappturalguru-dye the hair and keep rocking it,and put braids for months to keep it growing undisturbed!!

  • C.G.- Moisture and patience 🙂
  • C.H.- Don’t let other people tell you what is best for your hair. Research and experimenting will let you know what’s best.
  • T.S.G.-Don’t hide (wig, weave, braids etc.) your hair for at least 3 months. Wear it out and LEARN it. If you keep hiding it, you will never learn how to manage it and what products/tools work best for your texture. The earlier you learn, the better the experience as you progress. :~)

Henna Q&A

I have gotten a lot of questions about henna recently. I was answering them on my Facebook page and on Twitter, but it made me think that I should do a post. I’m sure there are other people who have the same questions. The ones that follow are the ones that I have been asked regularly.

1. What is henna good for?

According to Henna for Hair: Henna is a natural colorant, a hair strengthener, and has other benefits such as reduction of dandruff.

2. What brand should I use?

There isn’t one specific brand that you should use. You just want to make sure that it is body art quality henna.

3. How long should I leave henna in my hair?

This answer will vary depending on who you ask. I’ve heard everything from 2 hours to over 12 hours. I leave mine on for 2-4 hours. If you want the color to be stronger, you may want to leave it in longer.

4. Does henna have to sit before I apply it?

People let henna sit before applying to give the dye more time to release. Because I don’t use henna for color, I apply mine as soon as I mix it.

5. How often can I apply henna?

Monthly is considered to be a regular henna schedule, but you don’t need to do it that often.

6. Can I use henna if I have dye in my hair?

You can only if it is body art quality henna (as mentioned before). Henna that isn’t pure can have a bad reaction when applied to hair that has been dyed.

7. Does henna come in colors?

Pure henna does NOT come in colors. Sometimes cassia is referred to as “blonde henna”. Indigo is sometimes referred to as “black henna”. Neither one is really henna. If your henna says that is a specific color, you want to double check the ingredients.

8. Where can I buy henna?

An Indian grocery store is the best place because they usually sell henna for lower prices than you can find online, and you can avoid paying for shipping. If not, I have purchased henna from

9. Is henna hard to wash out?

Yes. I won’t lie. You will need to wash your hair several times to make sure you get it all out. I usually wash with just water first until I have gotten a good amount of the henna out, and then I cowash with an inexpensive conditioner because you may use the entire bottle.

10. Will henna change my hair color?

If you have dark hair, henna will give it a red tint. It doesn’t lighten your hair color. It will color grays a reddish-orange or red color. People with lighter hair will get more noticeable results. The tint in my hair has gotten more intense with repeated uses. You still can only see it in the sun or in certain light.

Winter Haircare Regimens

Bri of Hairs a thought , Brenesha of Transitioning to Natural, Cherilyn of Derby City Naturals, and Paige the Blogger share their winter hair regimens. Remember that this is what works for each of them, and hopefully these tips will help you to develop your own regimen that works for you.

Bri’s Reigmen:

Conditioners: My leave in Condish at the moment are the Yes to Inc. products (Cucumbers, Tomato, Carrots) mixed with 2 tsp of EVCO and 2 drops of tea tree oil; I also co-wash with HE Totally Twisted or Hello Hydration
Deep Conditioners: 4 tsp of whatever DC I’m using at the time (Beautiful Curls, Cantu Shea Butter Deep Conditioning Treatment, etc.) mixed with 2 tsp of EVOO, EVCO and 2 drops of tea tree oil
Protein enriched DC: 4  tsp of my current DC mixed with 1 egg, 2 tsp mayo, 1 tsp EVOO, EVCO and castor oil
Shampoo and Conditioner for clarifying: Design Essentials for now. Still looking.

Sealants:  4 tbs of 100% raw unrefined shea butter, 2 tsp of EVOO, EVCO, castor oil and aloe vera juice, 2 drops of tea tree oil and 4 drops of peppermint oil for scent
Hot Oil Treatment: 1 tsp of EVOO, EVCO, Grapeseed oil, Castor oil, Jojoba oil and 3 drops of tea tree oil. I have omitted vegetable glycerin for the mix since it’s a humectant and pulls moisture or the lack thereof from the air, which works in the more humid months but has a reverse effect during the cooler months.
Daily spritz: Kimmaytube mixture which consists of 2 oz of Black Earth condish, 1 tsp of Aloe Vera juice,  jojoba oil, castor oil, 2 drops of tea tree oil and water. Half of my spritz bottle contains water and the other half contains the mixture. Makes for a very moisturizing daily spritz.
Gel: 1/2 ECO Olive oil, 1/2 Aloe vera gel, 2 drops of tea tree oil
Every day I do the following:
Apply my daily spritz
Every other day I do the following:
Seal with hair with my sealant mixture
Once a week I do the following:
Overnight DC-I wrap my hair with ceran wrap and a clear shower cap, rinse with cold water in the morning and style as desired
Once a month I do the following:
Apply hot oil treatment-I wrap my hair with a ceran wrap and a clear shower cap, rinse with cold water in the morning and style as desired
As needed, I do the following:
Shampoo-before shampooing I will pre-poo with coconut oil for 30 minutes, shampoo, apply an overnight DC, condition and seal in the morning
I also receive steam treatments once a month at my salon
Once every 8 weeks I do the following:
Protein enriched deep conditioner-I again wrap my hair with ceran wrap and a clear shower cap, rinse out with cold water and style as desired
**Please keep in mind that this is MY regimen and what works for MY hair. This regimen or the mixtures listed may not work for you. This is just to give you an idea of what my regimen is and is a good starting point for those needing one.

Brenesha’s Regimen:

I am 9 months into my transition and I have decided to go on a 6 month protective style challenge.  I have noticed when my hair is protected in a style, my hair grows, sheds less, and is stronger.  Along with the protective styles, I plan to do more hot oil treatments to keep my scalp moisturized in the cooler air.  I use the Queen Helene Jojoba Oil Hot Oil Treatment.  I plan to shampoo once a month with Giovani’s 50:50 balance shampoo and I add a teaspoon of EVOO to my shampoo for added moisture.  I recently bought V05 from CVS when they had it for .77 cents and stocked up for for my weekly cowashes.  For my leave-in I will be using Shea Moistures Curl Enhancing Smoothy and sealing with either EVOO or EVCO.

Cherilyn’s Regimen:

To be honest my hair regimen does not change much throughout the year.  I use vegetable glycerin all year long (gasp!) in my conditioning spritz which includes water, oil, aloe and conditioner.  I wash/co-wash my hair at least once a week usually on Sunday’s and will either pre-poo or deep condition also.  As for oiling I switch in coconut oil mixed with a lighter oil (olive, almond, jojoba) to seal in moisture.  I like to use whipped shealoe butter for twisting my hair but will be experimenting with Cupuacu and MuruMuru butters.  While I still make sure I am putting water on my hair for moisture I will opt to spritz it with a water bottle instead of drenching it in the shower in the morning.  I sleep on my satin pillowcase every night.  I have also been doing scalp massages by applying little bit of jojoba or almond oil to my finger tips and massaging in.

Paige’s Regimen:

At the start of the fall season, I had my natural hair regimen set.  Two and a half months later, I have learnt so much about my hair that I had to make a few changes to my regimen.
Here’s a summary:
I begin my week by prepooing with a mix of castor oil and vatika.  I then shampoo or cowash the hair – however, I have dropped my previous conditioners (hello hydration and it’s a curl thing aka totally twisted) and have started using african black soap for my cowashing! I then either do a deep conditioning treatment or a hot oil treatment – I alternate each week in the month.
Once I have rinsed that off, I spray my homemade leave in moisturising spray and apply my homemade sealant to seal moisture.   If I am styling my hair in twists, braids etc, I use a mix of my own styling cream – shea butter, castor oil, aloe vera juice. With the exception of waterwashing my hair once or twice between cowashing/shampooing my hair, I generally just spritz and seal on a daily basis to maintain my hair.
Other things I incorporate into my regime include:
no more wash and goes – waaaayyy too cold for this
protective styling – braids and twists are my fav at the moment
