Product Review: Juices & Berries from Oyin Handmade

2 Apr

Description from the website:

“Greg Juice” has been one of our most popular products since its introduction more than two years ago – “Juices and Berries” is the same oil-free mixture of vegetable moisturizers and herbal essences; The change? The fragrance… Juices and Berries is fragranced with the juiciest, fruitiest, brightest fruit scent we could find! Perfect for summer, or anytime you want to sweeten your day.

I recently did a review of Greg Juice , which is just one of the Oyin Handmade items that I have tried recently. I tried Greg Juice, Frank Juice, and Juices & Berries. They all work the same way, but this scent was my favorite.

Juices & Berries contains: purified water infused with horsetail, lavender, nettle, roses, and chamomile; organic flaxseeds; aloe vera juice; vegetable glycerine; essences of lavender, sweet orange, ylang ylang; grapefruit seed extract; citric acid. It is naturally preserved with grapefruit seed extract and citric acid. Please use within 6-12 months, refrigerate for extended storage.

5 Things I Like About Juices & Berries (8oz.-$11):

  1. It has excellent ingredients.
  2. It leaves my hair feeling hydrated without weighing it down.
  3. It works well even when it’s diluted.
  4. Wonderful scent!!
  5. I can use it so many different ways including as a leave-in, as a refreshing spritz, a detangler, etc…

I like all of the same things about this that I liked about Greg Juice.  It’s  a great staple item to have because it’s multipurpose. Depending on your needs, you can dilute it to stretch it further. I purchased it from the Oyin Handmade website. If you want to see if it’s available at a store near you, check the site’s store locator. If you aren’t sure what you’d like, check out the sample sizes. I just ordered a new container of this because my sister “borrowed” the last one I bought. She loves it for keeping her sisterlocks moisturized.

Product Review: Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil

28 Mar

This post is a part of Natural Hair CommUNITY Days

This is another item that I received from LaVida Given by Nature. If you didn’t see my review of Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress, check it out HERE .

Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil (4oz. $19.43)

Description from the site:

Perfect for the dry winter months!  Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil keeps your hair moisturized between washings. Great when used moderately as a daily hair oil.
Carrot oil is rich in beta carotene, vitamins A (for a healthy scalp) and E (helping to stimulate hair growth) and provitamin A.  Castor Oil is a natural humectant that draws moisture out of the air bringing it directly to the hair shaft.  The hue of the oil comes from Carotene (deriving from the the carrot root extract) giving it it’s golden orange glow.

I used this oil in a few different ways. I used it immediately after applying my leave-in conditioner. I used it as a pre-poo. Mostly I used it as a daily hair oil. I loved it every way.

5 Things I Like:

  • Great ingredients including Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil,Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract,  Cocos nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Oil, Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Brassica oleracea italica (Broccoli) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Prunus dulcis var. amara (Bitter Almond), Litsea cubeba (Litsea), Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
  • It doesn’t weigh your hair down or leave it greasy
  • Works well for locs or loose hair
  • It smells great
  • Gives my hair a healthy sheen

I actually didn’t think that I liked castor oil before trying this. It felt too heavy. I’d never tried carrot oil. The combination worked wonders for me.  When I did my dry twist set, I used nothing on my hair besides the Ginger Juice & Berries and this oil for maintenance. It was so soft and had a nice healthy sheen. It’s also great for refreshing a wash and go. I spritzed with rosewater & glycerin and then topped it with a little of this oil. It’s great.

Product Review: Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress

12 Mar

I won a contest on Twitter and LaVida, the owner of LaVida Given by Nature , sent me a sampler package of her hair products. I’m going to review each one separately.

Description from the website:

Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress – 4 oz ($18.35)

This product was created out of desire for the total package.  Nothing too thick, too oily or too heavy but I wanted something that would coat and protect my hair (specifically thick natural, highly textured coils) when wearing a plaited style longer than a few weeks – all while nourishing and strengthening my hair.  After 2 years of formulating Ginger Juice & Berries, I finally came up with the perfect recipe that meets all of those hair demands.  Another bonus that was discovered is the lack of heavy product build after wearing a style for an extended period of time.

  • The medicinal qualities of comprised ingredients are said to lend in the effect of blood circulation in order to stimulate hair growth.
  • Rich in Vitamin C.
  • Coats and protects hair from elements.
  • Strengthens hair at the root.

5 Things I Like About Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress

  1. Excellent ingredients including: Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Arnica montana (Flower) Extract, Sesamum indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Emblica Officinalis (Amla) Extract, Bacopa monniera (Brahmi) Extract, Jatamansi Nardostachys (Spikenard) Extract, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Elaeis guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil, Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Lecithin, Candelilla (Euphorbia cerifera) Wax, Glycine Soja (Soybean)Wax, Green Tea Extract, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Root Powder, Eleuthrococcus senticocus (Ginseng) Powder, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Alkanna tinctoria (Alkanet) Root Powder, Artemisia pallens (Davana) Oil, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Oil, Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) Oil, Tocopherol
  2. Leaves my hair feeling soft with no greasy residue
  3. Great for daily use
  4. Great light scent
  5. Multipurpose

I loved this! Since I stopped using petroleum in my hair, I haven’t been able to find a hairdress. Ginger Juice & Berries fills that void. I can use it to keep my puff moisturized, it would be great as a hairdress if you have your hair straightened, wonderful for short haircuts, and it works great for protective styles.

I used it for a set of dry twists. When I attempted those in the past, the products were too heavy. This one does the job while still feeling very light. I used it in combination with LaVida Given by Nature’s Carrot and Castor Conditioning Oil.

After a week, I took the twists out. I had the best twist out I’ve ever had.

I will get better photos the next time I do a set of twists. This product will definitely be added to my list of staples. I am currently using the 20z jar, and most of it is still there after several uses.

Product Review: Design Essentials Natural Line

9 Dec

Design Essentials sent me their entire Natural Hair Care System to try. It retails at $88.50. All of the items are free of petrolatum, minera oil, parafin, silicones, and parabens. The set came with a style guide that gave detailed descriptions on how to use each of the products. I found that very helpful. A part of the reason some products don’t work is that we aren’t sure how to use them. They fixed that issue with the booklet.

The line includes:

Curls Cleanser  8oz. $12.90

The Curl Cleanser (Sulfate-Free Shampoo) is formulated with a blend of Soy Bean, Arnica and Rose Hip botanticals that gently cleanses the hair while infusing moisture to replenish even the driest curls. Ideal for all hair types.

  • Great fruity smell
  • Good ingredients
  • Decent results

Natural Moisturizing Conditioner 8oz. $10.90

With daily use, this lotion will soften the hair providing beautiful lasting sheen. Ideal for all hair types.

  • Smelled great
  • Natural ingredients
  • Left my hair feeling a little sticky
  • Didn’t moisturize my hair well

Natural Defining Creme Gel 160z. $25.90

The Natural Definng Creme Gel is a creamy, lightweight gel with strong holding properties that defines and separates curls whle providing a natural sheen and controlling frizz. Ideal for wavy to tightly curled hair textures.

  • Good ingredients
  • Smells like cake
  • Defined my curls and had good hold
  • Left my hair feeling a little heavy and stiff

Natural Curl Stretching Cream $26.90

The Natural Curl Stretching Cream is a high performance curl formulation with Almond Butter and Soy, that smoothes and conditions highly texturized hair while adding definition, moisture, incredible sheen and frizz control. Ideal for curly to tightly coiled hair textures.

  • Great ingredients
  • Smells like yogurt
  • Does a good job of stretching hair
  • Has good hold

My favorite item that I tried was the Curl Stretching Cream. It can be used for a wash and go or for other styles. It didn’t work as well for me for my wash and go. However, I am always on the hunt for products to use for twist-outs and braid-outs. I got great results with this. For me, a twist out usually only lasts a day or two. The Curl Stretching Cream allowed the style to hold longer. I will continue to use this.

Product Review: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

22 Nov

5 Things I Like:

  1. It is all natural. The ingredients include shea butter, coconut oil, aloe extract, silk protein, neem, avocado oil, carrot seed oil, honeysuckle extract, vitamin e, and an essential oil blend.
  2. It smells great!!!! You might be tempted to taste it, but don’t do it.
  3. It is inexpensive. The container is 12ozs. for $10.
  4. My hair was very soft after using it.
  5. I don’t have to purchase it online. It is sold at Target stores all around the city.

2 Things I Didn’t Like:

  1. I was a litte heavy with the application on my first use, and it made my hair look dull. It was better when I applied just a little.
  2. I thought it would be good for a wash and go, but it isn’t for me.

I will continue to use the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie as a moisturizer.  It works well for my braid-outs if I want a  bigger fluffier look, and my hair felt and smelled good. I also use it as a moisturizer when I am wearing a puff.

Product Review: Healing Herbs by Rene’

21 Nov

Rene, the Owner and Creator of Healing Herbs by Rene’ writes:

“All praise to the Creator for Life”
I’ve always been an Artist since youth, loving Nature and Natural living. Wearing my hair natural for years, ever since I lost my hair from a bad perm at the age of 13 years old. I began making natural hair products in 2000 using herbs from my garden along with essential oils and minerals. With years of research and studying herbs, making products for myself, and friends. Now I bring them to you. In 2007, I started Healing Herbs By Rene’ Web site to bring all of the products I love to you. Many people are enjoying the benefits of my Herbal Organic products. I want people to be aware that Natural is Beautiful and as long as you stay Natural your Hair will grow and be healthy.

I started growing Locks in 2000.  I made a Lock Journey Video from 2000-2008. I did my first big chop this last October 2010 to start  anew, I’m looking to wear  my twist out styles I wore in the 90’s, and now I see a lot of sisters going natural.  It’s a beautiful thing. Also, using Traditional Herbal Medicine has been a part of my Health Regimen and has helped my hair & skin health.

I tried 3 products from the Healing Herbs by Rene’ line:

Herbal Mist Spray

40z-$5.95/ 8oz. $9.95/ 16oz. $15.95/ 32oz. $25.95

The herbal mist spray is 100% natural. It is made of organic herb teas, pure essential oils, base oils, natural preservatives. I loved this spray. It works great as a morning and evening spritz. It gave my hair a nice sheen and it felt great. The mist also has a nice light scent. I would highly recommend this one. I also used it on my skin.

Extra Moisturizing Herbal Conditioner

4oz. $6.95/ 8oz. $13.95/ 16oz. $23.95

This conditioner is a blend of  essential oils, herb tea, citrus, olive oil, coconut oil, and natural base conditioner. This conditioner lives up to it’s name. It is extra moisturizing and very creamy. It works great as a regular conditioner or a deep conditioner. I preferred to use it as a deep conditioner. It left my hair extremely soft.

Irie Herbal Hair Gel

4oz. $7.95/ 8oz. $13.95

The ingredients in this gel are aloe gel, shea  butter, base oils, essential oils, and vegetable glycerin. This is a nice light gel that does not leave flakes and doesn’t dry hard.

All of the items I tried were great, and I would repurchase all of them. I plan to try more products from her line. Rene’ also sells samples of her products so you can test the items before purchasing a larger size. Check out her website by clicking the link on the sidebar under “Great Sites”.

Featured Business: Pura Body Naturals

16 Nov

Cupuacu Hair Butter

1. When did you start your business and why?

It really all began with my skin in 2007. I’ve always suffered from eczema and severely dry skin which needed steroid creams to remain under control. After numerous expensive visits to the dermatologist, I finally visited a holistic doctor who suggested I try some natural soaps and oils on my skin. I immediately went to the herb shop and realized there was a world of natural oils and plant products that were very beneficial to the skin. I started using the natural products on my skin and they worked miracles. My skin was no longer dry, itchy, and irritated all of the time once I started using natural products. Fast forward to 2008 I realized I had a complete “lab” of oils and butters because once I starting researching ingredients I would buy various ingredients to make my special concoctions.

The hair care products were birthed around that time when I decided to actually keep my hair curly instead of straightening with ceramic irons so much. I realized my curly hair was a lot different from my hair that was straightened with ceramic irons. My curly hair seemed to be dry, hard, and wouldn’t retain moisture. To make matters worse, my stylist was no longer working at the salon after having her baby. At that point I realized I didn’t know how to care for my own hair. I went through the product junkie phase which only resulted in me wearing wigs or braids a lot because my hair was a mess even with the commercial products. Nothing ever gave me results for more than 2-3 days. One day I just happen to take a class on how to make natural butters and lotions for the skin because I still have all of these ingredients that I have to do something with. After taking the class I discovered the link between skin and hair; what makes my skin soft would more than likely make my hair soft because of the triglyceride levels in oils. I would experiment with my ingredients at home, but by this time I was very intrigued by handmade hair care products from many small companies. I ordered from many of the small natural hair care companies and often enjoyed the results with the exception of none I tried would provide my hair with enough moisture.

I decided to take an assessment of my hair because I knew I wanted to use natural ingredients, I just needed to figure out what worked for my hair. I started taking notes on what my hair didn’t respond well to; mainly studying the ingredients in the products. Once I realized the ingredients my hair didn’t like I started researching ingredients to find something my hair might like. After a year of experimenting I finally found Amazonian butter and oils and started mixing them into my concoctions. To my surprise they worked better than anything I’d tried in the past. At that point I had body and hair products; at the same time I learned to hand craft mineral make-up as well. For there the concept of the company was birthed.

 2. What do you sell?

We specialize in hand crafting hair and body products using the best oils and butters the Amazon and tropical locations have to offer. We create our products with Cupuacu Butter, Murumuru Butter, Brazil Nut Oil, Sapote Oil, Mango Butter, Macedamia Oil, and other natural goodies. In addition to the hair and body products, we also hand craft loose mineral eye shadows with more makeup to come in the near future.

Murumure Moisture Milk

The most unique feature about Pura Body Naturals is that we’ve stepped outside of the box to use other ingredients that have great benefits. We take great pride in offering ingredients that are not very common but offer benefits above and beyond what most consumers expect.

Product Review: Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner

4 Nov

This product review comes to us from Derby City Naturals:

Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner

11 oz

Available locally at Whole Foods Market

AO products are 100% natural, vegan and not tested on animals.  This conditioner is marketed for those with dry, brittle hair to “detangle and smooth for ultra-soft, shiny, touchable hair”.

 5 Things I like:

  1. The ingredients are 100% natural and you can actually understand the ingredients list so I know exactly what I am putting on my hair.
  2. The conditioner is surprisingly thick! I placed it in the palm of my hand and turned my hand upside-down without it running.
  3.  A little goes a long way.
  4. It left my hair feeling very soft.
  5. It rinsed out clean without leaving any residue yet my hair felt very moisturized.

This conditioner was great and I can definitely see what the hype was all about. However this conditioner has no slip and I did not feel comfortable detangling my hair with it without causing breakage.  The conditioner is scented with natural honeysuckle and rose oil so it has a nice scent, however I think it is a bit strong.  Overall this is a great rinse-out conditioner but I need my conditioner to have good slip too.  If I were to use it again I would use olive oil to detangle first before conditioning.  As a side note my daughter has commandeered the conditioner and it is her new fav!

Thanks for the product review, DCN. Check out Derby City Naturals on Facebook for great information about natural hair.
