What Keeps You Motivated?

21 Mar

This post is a part of Natural Hair CommUNITY Days

Today I was in a store, and a young girl asked me if I had to cut all of my hair off to get it natural. I told her that I did cut all of my hair off, but that it’s possible to transition into it slowly. She smiled, nodded, and stared at my puff. She asked a few more questions. Then she asked if I was afraid of how it would look. I told her no because I was ready for the change. She said that she wanted to go natural, but she was nervous. I chatted with her for a little and tried to give her some encouragement.

Those types of experiences keep me motivated.  I love my hair for my own reasons, but there is something extra special about compliments when they come from a young person. I am glad to see more teens embracing natural hair, and I think it’s because they have so many more role models. It’s not just about a celebrity going natural, any one of us can inspire the next new natural.

As you deal with the challenges that come with natural hair, what motivates you to keep going?

Need a Little Natural Hair Inspiration?

This post is a part of the Natural Hair CommUNITY Days which begins today and will throughout March.

As some of you may know, I celebrated my 10 Year Natural Hair Anniversary in November. I can’t say that it was always easy, but I can say that it was worth it. You have to find ways to keep yourself motivated. Here are some tips on how to do that:

1. Research- Sometimes we get frustrated because we don’t know what works or how to do something. Don’t let the frustration get in your way. Take that as a hint that you need to seek out information. There is so much available on the web.

2. Experiment- I like to keep my regimen simple, but there are times when you want to try something new. That may be a hair recipe, a style, new accessories, etc…

3. Create a Real-life Support Team- If you can find a natural hair meetup group in your area, join it. There is nothing like being surrounded by a group of women with natural hair. It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.

4. Seek Inspiration Online- YouTube, blogs,  social media sites, and forums can be great sources of inspiration.

5. Consult a stylist- Before you give up, give a professional a chance to help you. The problems may not be as severe as you thought. Last summer, I was so frustrated with my hair. I went to a salon and got a haircut, and it made so much of a difference.

When all else fails, just marvel at the beauty of natural hair

Natural Hair Inspiration

When I think of someone who is daring with natural hair, Jill Scott is one of the first people to pop into my mind.  She is not afraid to try an unconventional style.  I love that she changes her hair so often.  It encourages me to want to experiment more with my own hair.
