Product Review: Beurre Mousse from MissShe Body Cocktails

26 Jun

Description from MissShe’s site:

Shea, cocoa, mango, aloe and cupuacu butters with essential oils make up this drink delicacy for the skin, in your favorite cocktail fragrance. Also contains
emu, acai, chamomile, argan and a variety of exotic fruit and nut oils. Naturally aiding skin affected by eczema and psoriasis. Also with ant-aging and
antioxidant qualities.

5 Things I Like About Beurre Mousse:

  1. It’s lightweight but extremely moisturizing
  2. It’s available in more than great scents
  3. Available in sizes 1/2 oz to 8oz ($1.50-$20.00)
  4. Has a great whipped texture that makes it easy to use
  5. Great ingredients

I’ve tried several products from MissShe’s line, and this is definitely one of my favorites. MissShe has taken different butters and oils that are great for skin and combined them into one. There are so many awesome scents. Some of those scents include Lemonade Ice, Peppermint Schnapps, Pink Lady, Margarita, Green Apple Martini, and Vanilla Solstice. Some lotions have a great scent, but you can’t smell it on your skin after a few minutes. This does not work that way. It lingers on the skin without having a heavy perfume smell.

The 1/2 oz is only $1.50. It’s a great way to buy a few to try different scents and to test the product. They also make great additions to gift bags. One word of warning: DO NOT LEAVE IN THE CAR DURING WARM WEATHER. This is true of any product that is a whipped butter. If you leave it in the heat, it will melt. You want to keep it with that same texture.

Another warning is to keep these away from my family because they love them. You might lose yours. My aunt loved the citrus scent of the Gin & Juice mousse. My sister loved the fruity scent of the Tropical Punch.  My favorite are the Pink Lady and  Cosmopolitan. A friend of mine has the Lemonade Ice, and she can’t stop using it. I need to get that one because I love lemonade scents.

Product Review: Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil

28 Mar

This post is a part of Natural Hair CommUNITY Days

This is another item that I received from LaVida Given by Nature. If you didn’t see my review of Ginger Juice & Berries Hairdress, check it out HERE .

Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil (4oz. $19.43)

Description from the site:

Perfect for the dry winter months!  Carrot & Castor Conditioning Hair Oil keeps your hair moisturized between washings. Great when used moderately as a daily hair oil.
Carrot oil is rich in beta carotene, vitamins A (for a healthy scalp) and E (helping to stimulate hair growth) and provitamin A.  Castor Oil is a natural humectant that draws moisture out of the air bringing it directly to the hair shaft.  The hue of the oil comes from Carotene (deriving from the the carrot root extract) giving it it’s golden orange glow.

I used this oil in a few different ways. I used it immediately after applying my leave-in conditioner. I used it as a pre-poo. Mostly I used it as a daily hair oil. I loved it every way.

5 Things I Like:

  • Great ingredients including Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil,Daucus carota sativa (Carrot) Root Extract,  Cocos nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Oil, Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Brassica oleracea italica (Broccoli) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Olea europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Prunus dulcis var. amara (Bitter Almond), Litsea cubeba (Litsea), Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
  • It doesn’t weigh your hair down or leave it greasy
  • Works well for locs or loose hair
  • It smells great
  • Gives my hair a healthy sheen

I actually didn’t think that I liked castor oil before trying this. It felt too heavy. I’d never tried carrot oil. The combination worked wonders for me.  When I did my dry twist set, I used nothing on my hair besides the Ginger Juice & Berries and this oil for maintenance. It was so soft and had a nice healthy sheen. It’s also great for refreshing a wash and go. I spritzed with rosewater & glycerin and then topped it with a little of this oil. It’s great.

Product Review: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

22 Nov

5 Things I Like:

  1. It is all natural. The ingredients include shea butter, coconut oil, aloe extract, silk protein, neem, avocado oil, carrot seed oil, honeysuckle extract, vitamin e, and an essential oil blend.
  2. It smells great!!!! You might be tempted to taste it, but don’t do it.
  3. It is inexpensive. The container is 12ozs. for $10.
  4. My hair was very soft after using it.
  5. I don’t have to purchase it online. It is sold at Target stores all around the city.

2 Things I Didn’t Like:

  1. I was a litte heavy with the application on my first use, and it made my hair look dull. It was better when I applied just a little.
  2. I thought it would be good for a wash and go, but it isn’t for me.

I will continue to use the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie as a moisturizer.  It works well for my braid-outs if I want a  bigger fluffier look, and my hair felt and smelled good. I also use it as a moisturizer when I am wearing a puff.

Product Review: Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner

4 Nov

This product review comes to us from Derby City Naturals:

Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner

11 oz

http://www.aubrey-organics.com

Available locally at Whole Foods Market

$10

AO products are 100% natural, vegan and not tested on animals.  This conditioner is marketed for those with dry, brittle hair to “detangle and smooth for ultra-soft, shiny, touchable hair”.

 5 Things I like:

  1. The ingredients are 100% natural and you can actually understand the ingredients list so I know exactly what I am putting on my hair.
  2. The conditioner is surprisingly thick! I placed it in the palm of my hand and turned my hand upside-down without it running.
  3.  A little goes a long way.
  4. It left my hair feeling very soft.
  5. It rinsed out clean without leaving any residue yet my hair felt very moisturized.

This conditioner was great and I can definitely see what the hype was all about. However this conditioner has no slip and I did not feel comfortable detangling my hair with it without causing breakage.  The conditioner is scented with natural honeysuckle and rose oil so it has a nice scent, however I think it is a bit strong.  Overall this is a great rinse-out conditioner but I need my conditioner to have good slip too.  If I were to use it again I would use olive oil to detangle first before conditioning.  As a side note my daughter has commandeered the conditioner and it is her new fav!

Thanks for the product review, DCN. Check out Derby City Naturals on Facebook for great information about natural hair.

Product Review: KnapsGirl’s Lil’ Better Butter

25 Oct

Lil’ Better Butter is sold by Knapsgirl. There is a link to her blog in the sidebar. She also has online stores that sell hair and body products and T-shirts.

Description of Lil’ Better Butter from the website:

A smooth creamy blend of unrefined shea butter, coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil. Lil Better butter is excellent to seal moisture into hair and skin. This product is all natural and handmade. There is a pleasant tropical fragrance.

Each jar contains four ounces of product for $10.

5 Things I like:

  1. The texture-much smoother and creamier than shea butter is alone.
  2. Ingredients- including unrefined shea butter, unrefined coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, scent oil, and vitamin e.
  3. I didn’t have to use much, so the container will last me for awhile. If you look at the photo, it shows only a small dent, and I have used it multiple times already.
  4. Scent-I chose the tropical scent, and it smells great. You also have the option of getting vanilla or cake scent.
  5. The butter worked well for my hair and my skin.

If I was going to add another one, it would be the sturdy container. That came in handy since I’ve dropped it about 3 times.  Anyhow, I love this butter. Shea butter on it’s own is too heavy for my hair.  I also don’t like having to rub it so much before I put it in. Maybe I’m lazy.  I’ve tried some other butters that used shea butter as a base, but this has worked the best for me.  It also smelled the best. Lil’ Better Butter was also much easier to use and I liked the added oils.  I will be using this much more now that the weather is getting chillier. Next, I need to try the cake scent.

Product Review/Giveaway: Wonder Curl Products

14 Aug

I tried both of Wonder Curl’s products which include the Get Set Hair Jelly and the Get Slick Hair Smoothie.

Get Set Hair Jelly 8oz-$15/ 160z-$25

What I liked:

  • It had good ingredients including organic aloe juice and kosher vegetable glycerin
  • It has a clean fresh scent
  • It gave me great twist-out results
  • I have used the 80z jar a few times, and it is not even halfway empty yet

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The 8oz jar would not last as long if I used it for a wash and go style because I have thick hair

Get Slick Hair Smoothie 40z-$7/ 8oz.-$13

What I liked:

  • It gave my hair great moisture
  • It works well with the hair jelly or on it’s own
  • Light fragrance
  • It has great ingredients including organic aloe, juice, organic castor oil, organic coconut oil, and distilled aloe water
  • A little went a long way. I have used the 4 oz. a few times, and I still have 3/4 of it left

Overall, I like the Wonder Curl line.   I have been looking for a product to use for twist-outs and braid-outs, and this worked great for me.  The other nice thing is that you can purchase the hair jelly in a 2oz size for $5 to see if you like it before committing to a larger container.

Product Review: Carol’s Daughter Ecstasy Body Wash and Shea Souffle from Batise

22 Jul
Batise writes:

Really in love with Carol’s Daughter Ecstasy body wash and shea souffle. It smells SOOOOO good. It seems like even after I wash my hands the scent lingers. It is very nice and aromatic. I think the name suits it perfectly. I always get compliments when I use any of their products but this is one of my faves. Find your signature scent and tell us Natural Reviewers all about it.

Thanks Batise for sharing another product review!

Product Review: Eco Styler Gel

21 Jul

5 Things I like About Eco Styler:

  • Inexpensive (about $4 for  the 32 oz)
  • Sold at many beauty supply stores
  • Gives good hold
  • Neutral smell
  • Can be used for different styles

3 Things I Dislike About Eco Styler:

  • It does not mix well with my creamy leave-ins
  • If I don’t brush it in, it flakes
  • It can make the hair feel kind of crunchy (I use a little spritz of my leave-in mix and scrunch it to fix that)

There is good and bad with every product, but this is pretty decent overall.  I have switched to using my water and hello hydration leave in spray with this instead of the creamy leave-in.  I also use less of my coconut oil.
